A festive homecoming celebration that began early Tuesday evening nearly turned tragic when a seven-year-old girl trying to cross a busy four-lane street was struck by a car on South Bridge Street around 8:30 p.m. According to witnesses at the scene, the newly- renovated Sonic Drive-In was packed with high school patrons including the young girl who had crossed the street from the Hiway Motel where she and her parents were staying. A pickup headed south on Bridge Street was stopped to turn left into the Sonic parking lot. The vehicle behind the pickup, a 2005 Toyota Corolla driven by Adam Droge of Utah, pulled around the pickup in the right lane and struck the girl as she ran out in front of the truck. The girl was transported to the Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital and was coherent and alert with no apparent major injuries.
