Playing the best defense in recent memory, the Brady Bulldogs annihilated the state- ranked Comfort Bobcats here last Friday night, 49-26. Brady coach Gary Jones, a man of few words, said that his team played with passion and intensity. “I’m very proud of the way our players handled our defense,” he said. The Bulldogs held the Bobcats to only five points in the second and third quarters combined. Brady athletic director Glen Jones said after the game that it was the best defensive effort he’d ever seen in high school. The victory puts Brady and Comfort tied for first place in District 8-2A with one game remaining. Brady is 22-6 overall and Comfort is 28-3. They are tied for the league championship at 8-1. The Dogs will be at Junction Tuesday (tonight) at 6:30 p.m. and Comfort will host Sonora. According to district rules, there will be a playoff providing there is a tie for the championship unless both coaches decide on another method. Larat Lawrence started the game off with a bang when he drained a three-point shot early in the first period. A couple of minutes later Mackenzie Hirt also converted a three-pointer that made it 8-7 with 3:08 left in the quarter. Jon Langseth, who was awesome all night long, scored a layup as the first period ended at 12-8. Tyler Campbell hit two field goals to start off the second quarter, and it was 17-8 with 4:14 left in the period. As the Bulldogs continued to pull away, the Comfort coach called a time-out. Zach Jones hit a jumper at 2:05, putting the score at 19-8 as the Dogs began pulling away from their opponent. Brady’s defense was so quick that Comfort did not make a single point in the second quarter until 10 seconds remained in the first half. It was 19-10 at intermission. If the Comfort coach thought the first half was bad for this team, the second half was a match. The Dogs scored 21 points in the third period to the Bobcats’ 3. Hirt, Langseth, Brantley King, Campbell, Lawrence and Garrison Jones all performed well. With 0:33 left in the third quarter, the score was 40-11. The visitors outscored the Bulldogs in the final quarter, 13-9, but the damage was already done. Langseth led the Dogs in scoring with 10 points. Other leading scorers were Hirt 9, King 7, Lawrence 7, and Campbell 7. Blanco led the Comfort team with 12 points.
