Lady Hornets up 22-2 this season, 7-0 in district

The Rochelle Lady Hornets won a close district game last Tuesday, beating the Cherokee Maidens, 41-38. “It was a close game all the way through,” said Rochelle coach Jym Dennis. “We could never pull away from them. Every time we would get about an eight-point lead they would cut the lead to one or tie it. “Defensively, we didn’t play very well. It took us until the last two minutes of the game to pick up the intensity and really start playing defense. In the last minute’after Cherokee had tied the game at 38-38’our defense really took over. In the last minute of the game our defense got three steals to seal the game. “It was one of those games that you are glad is over so you can move on to the next one.” Scorers for Rochelle: Bonnie Richardson 17, Keri Cook 7, Genisha Roberts 6, Veronica Engdahl 6, Sheena Marx 3 and Michelle Teague 2. *** On Friday night the Lady Hornets traveled to Eden and came away with a commanding 49- 25 victory over the Bulldogs. Eden got on the scoreboard first to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Hornets responded by scoring 12 straight points to take a 12-2 lead after the first period. They built on that lead in the second quarter, outscoring Eden 14-5 to take a 26-7 lead at halftime. In the fourth quarter, Rochelle scored another 10 points to Eden’s 14 to make the final score Rochelle 49, Eden 25. “I thought our defense really stepped up in this game,” said Dennis. “They were ready to play and it showed. The pressure by our guards never let Eden get into their offense. With the guards applying so much pressure, our post, were able to get several easy steals. Richardson led the Lady Hornets with a triple- double. She scored 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had 10 steals. “Roueche had a great game scoring 11 points and playing defense on their best post player. Keri Cook scored 10 points, Roberts and Engdahl each scored four points and Kayla Butler and Tiffany Cook both had two points each to round out the scoring. Sheena Marx and Michelle Teague did not score but they both did a good job playing defense. “With the win we are now 22-2 on the season and 7-0 in district play. We will host Lohn on Tuesday night.”
