Central Texas Opportunities, Inc. received 15,000 pounds of clear sand from Oglebay Norton Industrial Sands, Inc., to help replenish sandboxes at Brady Head Start and area Head Start centers. ‘We are more than happy to donate the sand. It’s all about the kids,’ said David Estes, lead man in charge of the screen house, rail head and the lab at Oglebay Norton. For approximately 30 years this prominent local business has produced industrial grade sand for commercial use. Most of the product is used by oil fields. ‘Oglebay Norton gave about 300 sacks (50 pounds each) to us to help fill the sandboxes at the centers. This helps the children improve their motor skills,’ said Kenny Smith, facilities maintenance technician. Central Texas Opportunities, Inc. operates 13 Head Start centers in the area. Head Start provides comprehensive child development services for children ages three to five. While children are with Head Start, families are included as an integral part of their child’s education. They receive social services, assistance with GED preparation or other educational needs, nutritional information, medical and dental screens for the children, parenting and social skills training, resource referral, etc. Head Start recruits and enrolls children with significant disabilities.
