Rochelle basketball tourney’

The Varsity Hornets took third place in their 2007 Rochelle High School basketball invitational tournament in which they hosted Nov. 29-Dec. 1. In round one for the Hornets, they pulled out a one-point victory over the JV Brady Bulldogs, 42-41. “We opened our tournament with a win against a very tough Brady JV team,” said Rochelle Coach Scott Edmondson. “They played defense extremely well, and we shot the ball very poorly. That combination made for a really close game. Although we only shot 11 for 36 from the free throw line, we somehow managed to make one when it counted and then made a big stop with one second left in the game to win by only a point.” Individual stats: Bryn Allgood, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, 11 points; Jerimy Allgood 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 7 points; Billy Rainwater, 4 rebounds, 2 steals; Hunter Stuart, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 11 points; Jeramie Flint, 2 rebounds; Korey Kunc, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, 3 points; Matthew Tyson, 3 rebounds, 10 points. In game two, the Hornets experienced their first defeat of the season, a 52-34 loss to Junction. Individual stats: B. Allgood, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, 5 points; J. Allgood, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 7 points; Rainwater, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 poinsts; Stuart, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, 13 points; Flint, 4 rebounds, 3 points; Kunc, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 points; Tyson, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 point. “We played a talented Junction team on Friday,” said Edmondson. “They played really good defense and shot the ball well. Offensively, we really did not play well; however, I was really proud of the way we played defense. We never gave up, and even when we were down by 17 late in the fourth quarter, we had kids giving 110 percent on the floor. That is the kind of effort I want to see out of our guys every game. The scoring will come with time, and if we keep playing defense like that, we will win some games.” In the final match-up, the Hornets edged the Santa Anna Mountaineers, 58-43, to take the third place trophy in their hometown basketball tournament. The win moves the Hornets to 4-1 this basketball season. “We finished the tournament with a third place win over Santa Anna,” Edmondson said. “We played much better than we had in the previous two games. We still are not shooting as well as we would like to be yet, but we did improve throughout the tournament. Defensively, we get better with each game.” Individual stats: B. Allgood, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 24 points; J. Allgood, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 3 steals; Rainwater, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 12 points; Stuart, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 8 points; Flint, 5 rebounds, 2 points; Kunc, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 5 steals, 8 points; Tyson, 3 rebounds, 4 points. Taking the top spot in the boys division of the Rochelle tourney was Junction in first place, followed by May in second, Rochelle in third and Lohn in the consolation bracket. Named to the “All-Tournament Team” for Rochelle was Hunter Stuart. ***
