The Brady Middle School eighth grade boys won the Brady Shootout Tournament last weekend defeating Llano in the first round and San Saba in the championship game to bring the team to 4-0 on the year. In the opening game against Llano, the team used a solid halftime adjustment to pull away from Llano as they posted double-digit quarters. After leading 10-8 at the half, a 24-8 run in the second half let the Brady squad cruise into the championship bracket. “We played a great second half,” said coach Daniel Cates. “They had some good inside play early on. We weren’t blocking out real well for rebounds, we were just jumping. Overall, that got better as the game went on. Everyone played really well together.” Score by quarters: Brady 5 5 14 10’34 Llano 2 6 4 4’16 Scorers for Brady: Logan Owens 10, Kyle Andrews 7, Johnny Flores 6, L.A. Villarreal 4, Marcus Marin 3, Andrew Brooks 2, Reece Jacoby 1 and Robert Ramos 1. In the championship game against San Saba, the Brady team had a solid first half, but finished even stronger as they posted a 16-5 run in the final period to win, 42-21. “San Saba began in a zone and we didn’t do a great job against it early on,” said Cates. “We gave up some easy scores on not finding our man on defense, but we quickly made adjustments and the kids really played well. We still need to work on slowing down and not turning the ball over, but so do all junior high teams. I am really proud of the way they played.” Score by quarters: Brady 9 11 6 16’42 San Saba 7 5 4 5’21 Scorers for Brady: Owens 5, Andrews 8, Flores 10, Villarreal 6, Marin 4, Brooks 7 and Taylor Kubacak 2.
