Melcer surprises field, takes title at SA match

Cody Melcer, a senior at Brady High School, added another championship to his tennis record last Saturday. Melcer competed in the Bentwood Country Club sponsored, United States Tennis Association (USTA) sanctioned tournament at San Angelo. He accomplished his goal, which he stated was to improve his classification and ranking in the USTA. Entering the tournament unseeded, Melcer won three rounds of singles matches against opponents from Midland, Grapevine and Kempner. The player from Grapevine was the number one seed in the competition. In the first match of the day, Melcer started out a little slow, but managed to win the first set 7-5. He then found his groove and crushed his opponent 6-0 in the second set to win the two-out-of-three sets match. He next met the top seeded Grapevine player in a semi-final match and sailed through that tilt, handily beating his opponent by scores of 6-0 and 6-2. He thus qualified for the final round of competition. By the start of the championship match, Melcer and his Kempner opponent were both tired from already having played two matches in the 90-degree heat. However the two players were evenly matched with each winning one set and having to play a tie- breaker for the third set. Melcer managed to come out on top with scores of 6-2, 4-6 and 7-6. Asked for his comments after winning the championship, Melcer said, ‘I feel that I played great tennis, but so did my opponents.’ He concluded with his trademark description of his win, ‘It’s delicious!’
