We made good use of a week off

Last week I visited with you so much about the Llano game I failed to talk to you about our plans for the open date we had last week. That, and our upcoming district race, will be the focus this week. We really had three good workouts last week. Remember, I said three good workouts. We worked out four times. After giving the guys off on Monday we really went back to fundamentals of blocking and tackling. As a matter of fact, we went back to basically the same fundamental conditioning and fundamentals stations we did at the beginning of two-a-days. We did that on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday along with trying to stay crisp offensively and defensively. Our goal was to let them off on Friday. Well, midway thru Thursday’s practice I guess our guys had decided they were through for the week. It did not end well and we went home. We had not finished our Thursday practice so we went back out on Friday (in full pads) and finished Thursday’s workout. We are better right now than we were at this time last week. Make no mistake about that. Let’s take a look at the district race beginning this Friday. District 8-AA really looks as formidable as it did this time last year. Blanco came in as the favorite and really has not disappointed anybody’ but they don’t seem quite as strong as last year. Comfort is still throwing the ball all over the place. Sonora and Junction both have new coaches and are improving each week. That brings us to this week’s opponent, the Mason Punchers. I’m not one to blow smoke up people. I will honestly say this team has improved as much as any I have ever seen from week zero to now. They are still very young but play well over their heads. Coach Joy and his staff at Mason are to be commended. Their schedule has steadily gotten stronger throughout the non-district slate and they are better off for it. But I honestly believe our non-district schedule (three Class AAA schools and a Class AA in the top 5 in the state) has also made us better. It will be a dog fight Friday night as your Bulldogs try to open the district race with a win for the first time in quite some time. Kickoff in Mason is at 7:30. See you at the game.
