Hornets come out strong in season opener against Zephyr, 60-14

The varsity Rochelle Hornets came out ready to play when they made the short trek to Richland Springs to compete in the 2007 Coyote Kick-Off Classic, an annual event that draws six-man football teams from across the state. The match-up pegged the Hornets against Zephyr and was Rochelle’s first regular season game of the new year. Noted as a “slow” first-half start for Rochelle by head coach Jym Dennis, the Hornets still managed a 60-14 blowout that sent the Zephyr Bulldogs home early in the fourth quarter due to the six-man 45-point lead rule. “I thought we started off slow in the first half: we didn’t tackle or block very well,” said Dennis. “In the second half, we woke up and started playing. “I was pleased with our overall effort. We had a lot of kids that played really hard. I thought our running game worked really well. Defensively, I thought we did great. Zephyr was inside our 20 several times and we kept them out of the end zone.” Jason Valliant led the Hornets in rushing with 12 carries for 280 yards and three touchdowns. Bryn Allgood carried the ball eight times for 94 yards and two TDs. Jerimy Allgood carried the ball three times for 27 yards and one score. Valliant also led the Hornets in passing, completing three of six passes for 54 yards and one TD. ‘Defensively, Rochelle forced five turnovers and garnered four interceptions and one fumble recovery. Hunter Stuart led the Hornets with 14 tackles and one fumble recovery followed by Bryn Allgood with 12 tackles and an interception that he returned for a touchdown. Valliant had seven tackles and an interception, and Jerimy Allgood had six tackles and an interception. Jeramie Flint also had six tackles, and Matthew Tyson accounted for one interception and two tackles. The Hornets will travel to Rising Star for a 7:30 kick-off Friday (tonight).
