Rainfall forces first scrimmage to be played in Brownwood

Let me first get this out of the way. We had to make a very hard decision last week to cancel our 9th and JV scrimmage with Early and move the varsity scrimmage to Brownwood. It was a very hard decision. We had watered our game field all week after fertilizing it the previous weekend. Almost four inches of rain fell on it Thursday night and Friday morning. Brownwood had to have an answer Friday before 7 p.m. if we wanted to use their stadium. The forecast called for an 80 percent chance of rain Friday night and 60 percent chance Saturday. Storms were all over the Austin/San Antonio area Friday at 3 p.m. and moving north. If we didn’t make the move Friday, and it rained at all Friday night or Saturday, we would lose the varsity scrimmage, as well. So, we made a decision to go to an artificial turf field. This option, at that time, looked good. But because of dry weather Friday night and Saturday, it now looks questionable. With the exact same circumstances we make the same choice again. With that out of the way now, you would have been proud of your Bulldogs Saturday night at Gordon Wood Stadium. We saw a lot of very good things against a pretty good football team. Those keeping score saw the Longhorns score two times while we scored once. But, if you were there, you would know that was not indicative of how the scrimmage went. Early scored on two long touchdown passes, and they did move the ball somewhat consistently through the air all evening. But, our achilles heel last season was run defense. Early had less than 30 yards rushing in 23 rushing plays. We were very excited about that aspect of our team. Offensively, I thought we were fairly consistent moving the ball. Two fumbles lost inside the Longhorn 10 yard line did not help. Neither did putting the ball on the ground four other times. Those are certainly correctable errors. But we are so far ahead of where we were this time last year. Right now we are much more physical and aggressive as a team, and that put a smile on my face Saturday night. We head to Ozona Thursday for our second controlled scrimmage of 2007. A schedule change has been noted in that the JV and varsity will play Ozona at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The freshman team will scrimmage against Goldthwaite in Hamilton at 5 p.m. Hope you can make the trip and support our guys on their journey to championship form. See you at the game.’GJ
