George Max Brandenberger, of Mason, Tex., died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007 at the age of 81. He was born Feb. 24, 1926, in New Braunfels to Silas and Bertha (Schreiber) Brandenberger. He was raised in the Ten Mile Community and was a 1943 graduate of Mason High School. He was inducted into the United States Navy on May 10, 1944 and was assigned to the USS Lycoming, a troop transport and supply ship. George was on the ship when they participated in the Battle of Okinawa. He was awarded the American Defense, Asiatic-Pacific and Victory Medals. After serving two years, he was honorably discharged on May 34, 1946. He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Betty Jo Shearer, July 28, 1946, in Mason. They were life-long ranchers, loved the land and recently received a Land Heritage Award for the continuous family ownership and care of the land for 100 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 2004. He is survived by three sons; Dale, Billy, and wife Donna, Carl ,and wife Kathy; one daughter, Barbara, and husband Charles. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Charla Pitcox, and husband Tracy, Barry Garner, Zane Brandenberger, and fiance, Kayla, Colt, Payton, Carson and McKenna Brandenberger. He is also survived by his brother, Silas Jr., and wife Patsy. Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. at Gentry Funeral Home in Mason with arrangements under the direction of Gentry Funeral Home in Mason.
