Rev. Blake O’Dell, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Brady, will be making his formal announcement this weekend of his upcoming move to Odessa where he has accepted the senior pastor position at Immanuel Baptist Church. The news of the calling began to filter through the Brady community earlier this week and the appointment and impending move was confirmed by Standard-Herald reporters on Wednesday in an informal interview. According to the church’s Web site, Rev. O’Dell’s first Sunday as pastor will be Aug. 12. The Odessa church is a “contemporary, purpose driven church” and has called O’Dell as’senior pastor. He and his family will be relocating to Odessa which is coincedentally his wife, Denise’s, hometown. My family and I are excited about moving to Odessa,’ O’Dell told the Standard-Herald Thursday. ‘Odessa is Denise’s hometown. She is a 1984 graduate of Odessa Permian High School, her mother and younger brother still live in the house she grew up in, and she has an older sister who lives just a few miles away in Midland, so it is going to be nice to be closer to family. ‘The decision to make this move has been difficult and has involved many factors. But in the end, my family and I feel that this is God’s will, and we want to be obedient to that will. While we look forward to what God has in store for us in Odessa, we will always treasure our ministry here in Brady. The people of Brady and especially First Baptist Church will always have a special place in our hearts. ‘One of my favorite Bible verses is Ephesians 1:3, ‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.’ ‘I always ask my congregation, ‘Are you blessed today’ As we end our ministry here in Brady, we can confidently say, We have been blessed.’ Besides his service to his church, he is also a member on the Brady ISD board of trustees. Denise has been a teacher at Brady Elementary since the family moved to Brady six years ago.
