Melvin Fire Department meeting The Melvin Fire Department will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 15, beginning at 7 p.m. in the fire hall. All residents of Melvin and the surrounding community are urged to attend this meeting and voice their concerns and support of the Melvin Volunteer Fire Department’s continued operation and future. 1945 BHS class reunion Members of the 1945 Brady High School class will meet Friday, Oct. 17 at the Caf’ on the Square for visitation and “dutch lunch” from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friends are welcome to join the group for lunch and visitation at that time. Helping Hands garage sale The McCulloch County Helping Hands Center will hold its annual garage sale on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 906 East 11th Street. The community is encouraged to come out and help support this annual fund-raiser. Mercury homecoming The annual Mercury homecoming event will be held Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Mercury Community Center, beginning at 10 a.m. The meal will be catered by Mac’s BBQ in Brady and plates will be available for $6 each. Door prizes will also be given away, and the community is encouraged to attend the homecoming event. The Mercury Community Association has planned several improvements to the center over the next year. Recently, a carport covering was added with the intent to later install tables under it. In addition, the association has applied for a grant with the hope of updating lighting, flooring and several other things at the center. For more information, contact Peggy Ross at 325-463-5314. Outreach screening/referral services If you or someone you know is having a problem with tobacco or a chemical dependency issue, the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council for the Concho Valley can be of assistance. All calls, screenings and referrals are confidential. The screening consists of an interview with a trained counselor to determine the existence and/or severity of an alcohol/drug abuse problem, the outreach screening and referral counselor will make referrals to appropriate treatment levels or to other agencies, as determined by the screening process.
