Brady 8th defense holds off Lions for two point victory

The Brady middle school football teams are off and running on the young season. The eighth grade B team took on the Brownwood Lions and after four quarters of back-and-forth action, the Bulldogs emerged with an 8-6 victory. “We scored in the first quarter on a 20-yard pass from Cody Melcer to Clay Hallford and Melcer snuck in for the extra two,” said coach Oscar Villa. “The rest of the game was nothing but defense.” Brady moved inside the red zone again in the third quarter thanks to another long pass this time from Rick Huerta to Quinten Schwertner which moved the ball to the Brownwood 5 yard line. The Lion defense held true and stopped the Brady team just shy on all four downs. “After a holding penalty, we moved back to the 15 and were denied. When they got the ball back, we held them and forced a punt, but they had a good punt to our 10. We had a turnover right there and Brownwood punched it in. “They scored after three rushes, but the two point conversion failed when our defense really got tough and held them. We got the ball back and time ran out with us on top, 8- 6.” Offensively, we played well but we really needed more rest to do things better. The defensive unit had a great game especially on the last score when they held them on the two-point conversion.
