Meeks blood drive slated next Tuesday

Meek Blood Center will be in Brady for a blood drive on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The Blood Drive Mobile Unit will be parked in front of the Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital 2008 Nine Road from 1-6 p.m. According to Annette Deans with the Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital, as little as three teaspoons of blood can save the life of a premature baby, while an accident victim may need as much as 30 pints of blood upon arrival at the hospital. In addition, cancer patients use as many as eight units of platelets a day while undergoing chemotherapy. There were 65 units of blood donated on Feb. 18 and 60 units on May 13. “Let’s see if we can have 75 on Aug. 26,” said Mrs. Deans. “Hospital employees get a half-day off with pay for giving blood. We challenge businesses to come up with an incentive for their employees.” Donors must have a photo identification card to present at the time of donation. Tables will be set up in the lobby of the hospital for paperwork and interviews. A T-shirt or a coffee mug will be given to all blood donors.
