Former Brady resident Matt Underwood is a few steps shy of officially becoming superintendent of the Mason Independent School District. In a board meeting last Thursday, the board of trustees voted to make Underwood the sole applicant considered for the position. That decision was followed on Monday with a vote of acceptance of Underwood as the new superintendant pending the necessary legal procedures and verification of required accreditations. The son of Jim and Cookie Underwood of Brady, Matt is a 1989 graduate of Brady High School. He attended Southwest Texas State University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in History prior to beginning his teaching career as a coach at Boerne Middle School. After teaching for two years in Boerne, he was promoted to assistant principal. He received a Masters of Education from Texas A&M University in College Station in the spring of 1996. He transferred to Lampasas in 1998 where he also served as assistant principal at Lampasas Middle School. He was hired as the Mason High School principal in July 2001 before transferring to Llano Middle School in 2002 where he also served as principal. He is replacing Jennings Teel who has served as the head of MISD for the past three years. Underwood currently resides in Llano with his wife, Fara. They are expecting their first child and reportedly have plans to move back to the Mason area.
