Area ranchers invited to free beef field day

A regional beef cattle field day will be held in Ballinger June 25 at the Sally Buxkemper ranch off River Road between Ballinger and Rowena. Sponsored by Texas Cooperative Extension, the event will offer live animal evaluation techniques in selecting replacement bulls and demonstrations on improved techniques in artificial insemination and estrus synchronization. Registration for the free program starts at 8:30 a.m. with the event to follow at 9 a.m. Dr. Alan McGinty, TCE range specialist, will begin the morning with a review of mesquite and small brush management methods as the group moves through mesquite control test plots. Dr. Todd Henderson, DVM, will follow with a discussion on new improvements in estrus synchronization and artificial insemination. The final speaker will be Dr. Steve Hammock, TCE beef specialist, who will lead the group through live animal selection using performance data to select replacement herd sires. The final session of the morning will highlight current events in the beef cattle industry. This session will include Country of Origin Labeling, Cooperative Marketing Strategies and a proposed national livestock identification system. The program will end with a complimentary noon meal sponsored by First National Bank of Ballinger. Two hours of continuing education will be offered to pesticide applicator license holders in attendance. Please RSVP by 5 p.m. Monday, June 25 so that meals can be prepared.
