No-smoking ordinance back on council agenda

The Brady City Council will meet in regular session this Wednesday, and with the Mayor’s prompting, a no-smoking ordinance in the city of Brady will again be on the agenda for consideration. The first reading of an ordinance restricting tobacco smoking in City facilities and other public places will be read in what has historically been a controversial issue of personal rights versus governmental legislation. This same ordinance was first placed on the agenda back in February and was met with stiff resistance from several local businesses and individuals. At that time, the ordinance failed in a 3-2 vote against the ordinance. As the first action item, the council will consider and act on a resolution approving a public utility easement and right-of-way agreement with the City of Brady and Winters Family Partnership, Ltd. The second and third action items, both of the same nature as the first, are each for easements and right-of-way agreements between the City of Brady and Clay and Wendy Jones and John W. and Doris Jones. All three items are related to right-of-way agreements related to the future building and construction of the water treatment facility to be located at Brady Lake. The remaining action item, also on the agenda as a resolution, is to ratify the purchase and aviation agreement with the City of Brady and Cheryl Huffman Doan. As ordinances, the City Council will consider approving: ‘ The second reading of an ordinance amending the fiscal year 2002-2003 budget; ‘ The first reading of an ordinance vacating portions of streets; ‘ The first reading of an ordinance adopting a dangerous dog policy; ‘ The first reading of an ordinance restricting tobacco smoking in city facilities and other public places; ‘ The first reading of an ordinance adopting the fiscal year 2003-2004 budget. Prior to considering the approval of the new budget, Brady City Mayor Clarence Friar will open the meeting for public questions and comments regarding the 2003-2004 budget. The meeting will adjourn following council comments and reports from the city manager and city finance officer.
