Tommy Ruth Bradley Archer

Tommy Ruth Bradley Archer, a longtime and beloved resident of Brady, died on June 8, of complications resulting from a fall in San Antonio, where she made her home for several years. She was born Jan. 13, 1917 to Thomas James Bradley and Dora Thorne (Griffin) Bradley in McGregor and moved to Brady at the age of two. She graduated from Brady High School and attended John Tarleton College in Stephenville, where she was a student of Dr. Charles Froh in the Conservatory of Music. She was a lifetime member of the Damrosch Music Club of Brady, and was a founder of the David Guion Junior Music Club, which encouraged music appreciation in children. She taught piano for many years, served as organist at the First Methodist Church for 35 years, where she was a member, and at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, for a number of years. She was employed by the Brady Independent School District for 15 years, during which time she worked in the field of special education. An avid golfer for many years, she was a member of the Women’s Golf Association of Brady. Predeceased by her husband, Norman Dayton Archer and by her parents, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jon Ford; her son, Dayton Archer; and grandchildren, Thomas Ford, Elizabeth Ford Halbert and her husband, Matthew and Christopher Ford, all of San Antonio; a brother, William Bradley of Burbank, Calif.; and two sisters, Glenna Bratton and husband, P.J., of San Angelo and Evelyn Hackedorn of Houston. She is also survived by Jeannette MacDougall of San Antonio and sisters-in-law, Vera Archer of Brady, Mildred Prentice of Austin and Ruth Archer of Farmington, Conn., as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial gifts in her name be directed to the music ministry at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 11 St. Luke’s Lane, San Antonio, Tex. 78209 or to The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, 7402 Robin Rest, San Antonio, 78209. In thanksgiving and praise of her life, a Memorial Eucharist and Organ Recital will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio on Wednesday, June 18 at 2 p.m., with The Rev. Dr. Malcolm A. Ellis officiating. Private interment. Arrangements with Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough, San Antonio, Tex. 78212. Tommy Ruth will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.
