Elmer P. Eckert, 85, of Mercury, died Thursday, May 1 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Brownwood, Pastor Phillip Graff officiating. Burial followed at the Rest Haven Cemetery in Brady under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early. Eckert was born on Nov. 11, 1917, in Mason County, the son of Alfred and Alpha (McWilliams) Eckert. On June 2, 1940, he married Virginia Oldham in Mason. He had been a farmer and rancher in the Mercury area for many years. He has been a resident of Mercury since 1946, formerly of Mason County. He was a member of the Grace Luthern Church in Brownwood. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Eckert of Mercury; a son, Arliss Eckert and wife, Janis, of Fort Worth; a daughter, Mereta Brown of Mercury; two sisters, Elsie Watters of Abilene and Dorine Probst of Brady; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a niece; a nephew; and one great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Alpha Eckert.
