The McCulloch County Retired Teachers met at the Caf’ on the Square, April 8, at 11 a.m. President Eloise Ficke presided. She led the group in the pledge to the flag. Mildred Weatherman then led the group in prayer. The singing of ‘God Bless America’ by the group followed. President Ficke introduced the speaker of the day, District XV President Marie Yazell. Mrs. Yazell asked that information be sent to the State Historian for the scrapbook to be displayed at the State Convention, April 23-26 in Wichita Falls. Mrs. Yazell addressed the two greatest concerns of the Association in Austin, (l) loss of membership and (2) health care. She admonished the members to be aware of legislation concerning teachers and retired teachers. Retirees were urged to attend the Spring Conference, in San Angelo. Following the program the meeting date for the May meeting was discussed and agreed upon. The regular meeting will be Thursday, May 15, at noon. Place will be decided and members will be notified. Dues for the 2003-2004 year will be paid at this meeting and officers for the coming year installed. An ‘after school’ tea-reception for newly retiring teachers will be held at the home of Maedell Long also, May 15. Books will be distributed to children in Headstart and children in Kindergarten in Lohn and Rochelle. Mary Bates reported one applicant from Brady for the Local scholarship at this time. Treasurer Frances Huntington will send a donation of $22.22 ($200.00 between 9 units) to State to be presented at Mike Lehr’s retirement as an expression of gratitude for his many years of work for our association. Plans for the Fall Convention were formulated. The meeting will be at the Rochelle Club building. The noon meal will be a salad luncheon. The charge will be $7.
