Menard County to feature water management tour for gardeners, farmers, ranchers Friday, April 11

The Menard County Spring Garden and Landscape and Farm and Ranch Water Management Tour will get underway Friday, April 11. The morning session, will feature “Home Landscaping with Water Conservation in Mind,” and registration will begin at 10 a.m. in the Menard County Courthouse. At 10:15, the event will get underway with a grade school tour at the Menard Independent School District. This event will feature John Begnaud’s “Landscape Design with Water Conservation in Mind,” and Billy Kniffen’s “Rainwater Harvesting.” The tour will leave for Pat Stewart’s, Pat’s Plants in Fort McKavitt at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12 noon at the Fort McKavett Country Club (RSVP for meal by 12 noon April 10). The speaker for the lunchtime event will be Fred Teagarden with the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) featuring “Brush Management on the Concho River.” The afternoon session will get underway with “Farm and Ranch Water Management” following the meal. An irrigation tour will begin at 1:20 and will include presentations by Caroline Runge, flow monitors on ditches; Dr. Guy Fipps, Extension Agricultural Engineer, irrigation efficiency; Billy Kniffen and Dr. Jake Landers, seed production plots and irrigation demands; Dr. Landers, rangeland water capture; and Ms. Runge, water flow study in the San Saba River (irrigation ditch, sprinkler systems and drip irrigation). The tour will adjourn at 4:20 p.m. The cost of the event is $10 per person including the meal or $2 for the morning or afternoon sessions only. The tour is sponsored by the Menard Garden Club, LCRA/PEC, Menard County Underground Water District and the Menard County Extension Committee.
