Bulldog 8th girls seize district titles

Wrapping up the season with two of the best games yet, the Brady eighth grade girls teams sealed their district championships with season-ending victories over the Wimberley Texans. The Brady A team posted one of their best games all year as they pounded the Texans, 51-19. Shooting nearly 70 percent from the free throw line, the Brady cagers used nine members of the team to add the points to the victory. “This was a great game,” said coach Misti Kilgore. “Probably the best game all season. They shot about 70 percent from the free throw line and played a great defensive game. I can’t believe the season is already over!” Erica Quintero led the way on the offensive side of the court for Brady as she posted 11 points coming on four field goals and three buckets from the charity stripe. Following close behind was Kendale Rice with eight highlighted by six shots at the line. Lauren Pittman was next with seven points, five of which came from the free throw line. The trio of Erica Longoria, Callie Young and Katherine Ramon teamed up for six points each adding 18 points to the board. The game was never in doubt from the get-go as Brady stormed out of the gates in the first period and posted a commanding 14-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. That lead grew even more in the second as Brady added another five points to their lead with a 10-5 run. The Bulldog defense opened up the game even further in the third as they put it out of reach with a 15-5 run to lead 39-12 at the start of the final stanza. “These girls have improved so much over the season,” said the coach. “I have coached hundreds of girls in my career, but I’m not sure I have ever bonded with a group like I have this one. They are pretty good players, but they are even better kids. This community has a lot to be proud of.” Other Brady scorers: Celena Resendez 2, Tiffany Williams 3, Monique Holloway 2. As the only team to defeat the young Brady girls throughout the entire season, the Texans had more than they could handle. “We did a great job on both offense and defense,” said coach Kilgore. “We did have some problems in the first half breaking the press, but at the half we changed up our press-breaker which solved the problem.” The first half for the Bulldogs was a close battle as Brady led by two after the first. The lead grew a little in the second before the Lady Bulldogs opened up the offense in the third and went on an 11-4 run which was exactly what the team needed. The game ended with Wimberley making a strong effort at a comeback, but the Brady team held on for the 10-point win. “The girls were the district champs for the B teams and I could not be more proud,” said Kilgore. “They have all improved this season.” Scorers for Brady: Chelsea Brown 8, Courtney Garcia 6, Camille Poe 4, Kelly Tally 4, Ashley Hext 6 and Heather Delafuente 3.
