Lady Hornets hang Coyotes out to dry in 48-47 clincher

The Rochelle Lady Hornets took on Richland Springs Friday night in Brady and with a clinching 48-47 win over the Coyotes advanced to the bi-district round in Panther Creek. “At half time I thought we were in control of the game but the Richland Springs girls outscored us in the third and fourth quarters,” said Rochelle coach Mike Gardner. The Hornets were down by four points with one minute and 30 seconds to go, and “Tanda Cook was not going to allow them to defeat us,” said Gardner. “She made a three pointer and two free throws to put us up by one point. “Richland lost the ball out of bounds on their end of the floor. Thank goodness their coach called time out with about 10 seconds left on the clock (I had no time outs left). I was able to draw up a deep out-of-bounds play, and my girls pulled it off beautifully. We ran out the clock to win second place in our district. “Cook made 10 three pointers and scored 36 points, and Jacki Williams had a good defensive game. Other Lady Hornet scorers were Jacki Williams 6, Sarah Crowder 3, Adele Richardson 2 and Danielle Adams 1. “We went into this game with a plan to hold down their strong post player who scored 28 points in our last meeting. Adele Richardson held her to eight points. This was the key to our win. The Hornets play Veribest Tuesday, Feb. 12 (tonight) at Panther Creek for their bi-district game. Score by quarters: Rochelle 13 13 10 12’48 Richland 7 12 14 14’47
