Brady couple’s grandson named academic all-state

Jonathan Maikell, a senior at Sweetwater High School, was recently named to the Class 3A Academic All-State Football Team (second team) by the Texas High School Coaches Association. He is the son of Steve and Linda Maikell of Sweetwater and the grandson of Red and Kay Simpson of Brady. Jonathan’s father is the superintendent of schools at Sweetwater and his mother is the head counselor at SHS. Requirements for the honor include having an overall grade point average of 92 or above, being a member of the football team in good standing, being a senior and being of good moral character. Selections were based on GPA, class ranking, ACT or SAT scores, school honors and community service honors. Among his many accomplishments are that Jonathan was a national qualifier for TSA structural engineering 2000 , and competed in problem solving national TSA 2000, both at Atlanta, Ga. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, attended Boys’ State in 2001, the regional UIL speech competition in persuasive speaking, is in the top 10 percent of his senior class, is on the ACT/SAT honor roll and was the team captain of the Texas BEST Robotics competition in 2001. Jonathan has been on the Student Council at Sweetwater all four years, serving as a representative three years and the treasurer this year. He’s been in Who’s Who from 1999-2002. Currently, he is undecided upon where he’ll be attending college, but he plans to major in mechanical engineering.
