Brady freshman win two more; avenge themselves against L.Hill

The Brady freshman boys added another pair of tally marks to the win column with victories over Burnet last Friday and Liberty Hill on Tuesday. In the game against district rival Burnet, the Brady team used their strong press to open up a sizeable 30-13 lead by the end of the second period. A strong second half allowed the Brady team to cruise to a solid 58-29 victory. “All nine players did a great job in the press and also hustling back into our defensive set when Burnet did break it,” said coach Tim Kilgore. “Cooper Bagheri had a great game rebounding, especially on the offensive end. Justin Pollok also had his most aggressive game of the year. In all, seven players posted points on the night led by Paden Behrens’ 16 points which came on four field goals, one three pointer and going five of six from the free throw line. He was followed closely by Nathan Price with 14 which came on four field goals, one three pointer and a perfect three of three from the charity stripe. Other scorers were: Bagheri 9, Gilbert Rodriguez 9, Channing Booker 7, Dustin Jones 2 and John Vara 1. “We are all still learning how to mix it up while we are blocking out and playing defense,” said coach Kilgore. “This group keeps improving each week and they are fun to coach. We shot a season high 70 percent from the free throw line which always makes a big difference in the game.” Score by quarters: Brady 15 15 14 14’58 Burnet 6 7 11 5’29 H Tuesday night, the freshman team traveled to Liberty Hill with payback on their minds and they avenged their only district loss with a 63-51 victory. “With the district race in the balance, we went to Liberty Hill and got back our only district loss,” said coach Kilgore. “This was a game we have had circled on the calendar for almost two weeks now. In our shoot-around before we got on the bus, all the players were talking about getting this one and I knew they were focused and ready.” An 18-point halftime lead didn’t hold up in the third as the Bulldogs went a little cold. Liberty Hill outscored them 14-6 in the third. The Panthers got rid of their press which Brady had under control and took advantage of the change. Brady finally went man-to-man in the fourth and took control from there on. “This was a well-coached team and we knew they would make a run at us,” said the coach. “Paden and Gilbert had strong games offensively and John Vara was a terror on the boards. Dustin Jones came in and had a major contribution from the free throw line and the team followed up the last game with another great free throw percentage. We started emphasizing our free throws at the start of district and we are seeing results.” Scorers for Brady: Behrens 21, Rodriguez 19, Price 15, Jones 6 and Vara 2.
