Brady’s Bulldogs notched their first district basketball game of the season here Tuesday night when they defeated the Llano Yellowjackets in a high-scoring game, 86-76. The Dogs are 1-3 in district and 8-13 overall. Llano is 0-4 in district. “This was a great win for us,” Bulldog coach Shawn Dalbert exclaimed. “This victory gives us momentum to compete for a playoff berth. It will be a big game for us Friday (tonight) here against Burnet.” The Dogs grabbed a three-point lead after the first quarter, but the Yellowjackets rallied and held a one-point (38-37) advantage at halftime. “We didn’t play very good defense. We weren’t getting back soon enough and we weren’t blocking out under the basket. For some reason, I had a poor night coaching, and assistant Larry Hoelscher helped a bunch,” Dalbert said. The Bulldogs came back in the third quarter to obtain a 62-55 lead after three quarters. “They made a couple of runs at us in the second half, but the kids stepped up and stopped them,” the Brady coach said. The Brady guards paced the attack for the Doggies as sophomores C.J. Villegas and Cole Whisenhunt scored 42 points. Villegas had 22 and Whisenhunt 20. Hunter Wilkinson also had 20 points and Adrian Ni’o and Clifton Tally each had 10 points. “Llano is quicker than they were last season, and they will probably have a say in which teams make the playoffs,” Dalbert said. It’s also a certain fact that Wimberley will cop the district title and Burnet is an odds-on pick for the runner-up spot. But there is a mad scramble for the third slot between Liberty Hall, Ingram and Brady, according to Dalbert. “We surely could help our cause with a win over Burnet here Friday night,” he said Wednesday morning.
