Wall edges Brady 8th girls in tournament title game

After drawing a bye in the first round of the Wall Tournament, the Brady eighth grade girls needed only one victory against Sonora to end up in the championship game. In their matchup with the Broncos, the Brady girls met their first opponents who were experienced with working against a full press. A tough first half battle ended with Brady taking an 18-16 lead into the locker rooms. “We started out a little slow in the first half, but after the break, the girls really turned things around,” said coach Misti Kilgore. “At halftime, we put together a half court man-to-man that seemed to solve our problems. We did a better job at moving the ball in the second half.” Monique Holloway was the points leader for Brady with 12 points coming off of two three-pointers and three field goals. “This was a great team effort. The girls all did an excellent job,” said the coach. Erica Quintero picked up the scoring for the Bulldogs with 13 points coming from five field goals and three free throws. “Wall was a good team and just happened to do a pretty good job at the free throw line,” said coach Kilgore. “We simply sent them to the line too many times. They ended up going 10 of 24 from the line. “This game showed that our girls need more work against a man-to-man defense. They got tired and went stagnant on offense. We could not run an effective offense because we could not move the ball. We began to play sloppily and turned the ball over,” said the coach. “Just like any young team, we have room for improvement. With the drive and determination they have, they will get there. I was very proud of them for bringing home a second place trophy.
