American Legion and Auxiliary News Howard Kilmer Post 510, Mercury The Howard Kilmer Post 510 of the American Legion and Auxiliary are hosting a fundraiser, a chili/stew supper, on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Post Home in Mercury. A meal consisting of chili, beans, stew, cornbread, crackers, dessert, tea and coffee may be enjoyed for a donation of $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Live music will be the entertainment for the evening. The public is invited to attend. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m., the Legion and Auxiliary met for their monthly business meetings. Evelyn Farris and Billie Mae Smith were hostesses for the social hour. A delicious meal was served to 15 members. President Peggy Ross shared with the Auxiliary the awards received at the District Convention held in Kingsland in October. The awards received from Department of Texas for 2000-2001 were: Meritorious Service Award for Best Unit Pressbook, Category 1, first place; Cancer Research Program with most total money contributions’Category 3, third place; Certificate of Appreciation for contributing to the Auxiliary Emergency Fund; Certificate of Appreciation for participating in National Education Week; and Certificate of Participation for reviewing and updating Unit Constitution, Bylaws and Standing Rules. The Unit also received Certificates of Appreciations from District 21 for reaching their 74 percent 2002 membership target by Sept. 28, 2001 and in recognition of being a top ten achiever membership in the 21st District. June Long and Sadie Kilmer, membership co-chairmen, announced that the unit had met their 100 percent goal. The next regularly scheduled meetings will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. with the social hour beginning at 6 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend.
