Banjo playing storyteller to visit North Ward students

The North Ward Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) will kick off the new year by sponsoring a fun and educational event for students at North Ward. On Tuesday, Jan. 22, the school will welcome Dan Gibson, a storyteller and banjo player from the Dallas area. Gibson will arrive at North Ward at 9:15 a.m. and perform in each class throughout the day. A full-time professional storyteller, he tells thought-provoking and entertaining stories for children as well as adults. His stories teach lessons such as showing respect for one another and understanding the differences between people; learning how to respect the environment; the rewards of generosity and the wisdom gained from experience. Gibson’s repertoire includes traditional folk tales, historical tales and legends from many cultures, original stories and a bit of outrageous cowboy poetry. Old-time banjo music, sounds of the mountain dulcimer and a one-string pickin’ bow add musical textures to his programs. Some comments from previous performances include: “His style has universal appeal: the children and adults alike appreciated his easy delivery, comedic timing, extensive musical training and especially the heart in his selections of stories.” and “I particularly enjoyed the demonstration of rare and exotic instruments from around the world.”. His programs encourage critical listening, speaking and language appreciation for the children. Parents are welcome to join their child’s class to hear Gibson’s program.
