Doggies lose to Sweetwater in tourney consolation finals

The Brady Bulldogs won one and lost two at the annual Brownwood Basketball Classic after the Christmas holiday. After falling to Killeen Harker Heights (66-33) in the opening round on Dec. 27, the Dogs whipped the Brownwood J.V. (51-37) in the second round then were tripped up by Sweetwater (50-44) in the consolation finals game. The Doggies are 6-9 in non-district with only two more contests before District 26-3A play begins here on Jan. 11 against Liberty Hill. “We need to be more consistent night in and night out,” Brady coach Shawn Dalbert said. He said his players are playing well defensively, but they are not converting (making shots) on offense. “We also need to begin starting better. In the two games we lost in Brownwood, we trailed by 16 points after the first quarter in the first game and by 14 points in the second game,” he said. The slow starts are very difficult to overcome, Dalbert observed. He added that his charges are executing well and playing hard, but shot-making has been lagging. “We are running our press very well, but we’re not knocking down the shots,” Dalbert said. He praised the play of junior 6-5 Blake Andrews. “He’s been stepping up his play.” The Dogs will be at Grape Creek on Friday (tonight) and will close out their non-district schedule on Jan. 8 by hosting Ballinger.
