Brady 8th girls take first at Bangs tournament

The Brady eighth grade girls basketball team participated in the Bangs tournament last week and after three hard-fought games, they emerged as tournament champions. In the first game against the home team, the Brady girls used a strong 14-3 run in the second quarter to boost them to a 37-31 victory as the duo of Lauren Pittman and Erica Quintero each posted nine points to lead the Bulldogs. “The girls did a great job defensively and took advantage of Bangs’ foul trouble in the second half,” said coach Misti Kilgore. Lenient officiating and aggressive play by both teams sent both Brady and Coleman to the foul line numerous times and the Bulldogs capitalized. “Whenever you have two aggressive teams and relaxed officials, things have a tendency to get crazy. Fortunately for us, we did a good job at the free throw line,” said Kilgore. Scorers for Brady: Erica Longoria 10, Heather Delafuente 3, Tiffany Williams 4, Katherine Ramon 10, Monique Holloway 7, Lauren Pittman 4 and Erica Quintero 16. I feel like the game came down to a lot of heart and a little help from above. They were exhausted having to play man-to-man for the entire second half. There was no letting up.” The game was tied with 10 ticks left on the clock when Brady called a timeout. On the inbound pass, the Bulldogs worked the ball to the inside and with one second left on the clock, Longoria’s shot fell as the buzzer sounded. “The girls did a great job playing under pressure and once again, the tournament title is ours for another year,” said Kilgore.
