Many schools consolidated with Rochelle

Several schools have consolidated with Rochelle over the past 70 years. Mercury was the last one to do so. Others joining Rochelle included Corn Creek, Milburn, Cowboy, Midway, Fairview, East Sweden, Claxton, Round Mountain and Placid. Most of those consolidated peacefully, however; Mercury wanted to join up with Brownwood. The county board objected, therefore Mercury went with Rochelle. The students came and a lot of them were outstanding in sports, academics and all parts of the school. On the photograph accompanying this story are students from Placid in 1929-30, about 80 of them. Arthur Deering was principal and Faye Pool was teacher. I knew all of them except for five. I don’t know what kind of students they were, but they were all good friends of mine.
