‘Coach of the Century’ to speak to Lions Club

Legendary Texas coach Gordon Wood will be the guest speaker at the Brady Lions Club on Thursday, Dec. 20. He plans to talk about football and his autobiography, “Coach of the Century,” which has just recently been published. “Coach of the Century” is a heartwarming and inspirational tale about a dirt poor farm boy who never played a down of high school football, and how he became the winningest football coach of all time. When he retired in 1985, Wood had won more games than any other coach in history. His record includes nine state football championships’two at Stamford and seven at Brownwood. His coaching journey included stops at Rule, Roscoe, Seminole, Winters, Stamford and Victoria, before he landed at Brownwood in 1960. In November of 1999, Wood was named the most outstanding coach of the 20th Century by a panel of well-known Texas sports writers and coaches selected by the Dallas Morning News. His life story, as told in his autobiography, is an inspirational and exhilarating tale’full of humor, love, perseverance and heart-stopping football. The Brady Lions Club meets on Thursday at the Caf’ at the Depot from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Coach Wood will be available to autograph copies of his book after the meeting. The public is invited to attend.
