As a way of recognizing the support and efforts of businesses and individuals in McCulloch County for their support of the McCulloch County Livestock Association, the Brady Standard-Herald will be featuring the top 11 financial supporters of last year’s stock show in a business showcase in the weeks leading up to the Jan. 11-12 show. The businesses will be featured in sequential order according to their level of support. The McCulloch County Livestock Association wishes to express their appreciation and thanks to all businesses and individuals for their continued support of the youth in the county. The funds raised in the premium sale at the annual show are paid directly to the contestants and help offset the costs associated with purchasing, feeding and caring for the animal. Contestants can spend several hundreds or even thousands of dollars in transportation and entry fees throughout the course of a year traveling to stock shows across the state. The top 11 supporters of last year’s livestock show were: 1. SureFed Feeds, 2. Commercial National Bank, 3. Wau-ban-see Corrientes, 4. Brady National Bank, 5. Behrens Farms, 6. Probst Farms, 7. Jacoby Feed & Seed, 8. Lo-Tex Grain/Lohn Fertilizer, 9. James Long Real Estate, 10. James Friar Auctioneer, 11. Lone Star BBQ. SureFed Feeds Top financial contributor 2001 McCulloch County Livestock Show With a goal of trying to make sure every livestock entrant broke even, SureFed Feeds ended up as the top overall financial contributor at the 2001 Junior Livestock Show and Sale held last January. SureFed Feeds, a feed mill located just across the railroad tracks on the north side of Brady Creek, was purchased from Allied Feeds in May of 1997. Specializing in high quality feeds for a variety of stock animals, they have distribution in six states including Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma and California. Working closely with respected nutritionist Terry Blair, Barksdale and SureFed have developed a meat goat feed that has been the primary feed in meat goats that have won every major livestock show in the southwest region. To date in this showing season, SureFed champion goat feeds have already produced grand champion goats at the Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma State Fairs. SureFed also is a major provider of premium deer feeds developed in conjunction with the efforts of Terry Pluenneke. “We at SureFed made up our minds last season to try and take care of not just the top finishers in the shows, but the ones who finished in the placings on down the line,” said Barksdale. “We really wanted to do our best to try and make sure each kid broke even, or at least came close to breaking even on their project.” SureFed Feeds’ local business is comprised of a feed mill that makes and distributes various feeds to its regional sales outlets and also a local feed store that sells and markets a variety of farm and ranch supplies. Ronnie Jonas is the plant manager in charge of the mill, Chad Boykin is the store manager, Rhonda Christy is the plant office manager, Melissa Smith is the assistant manager and bookkeeper at the store and Christina Aguierre is the assistant office manager at the plant.
