Helen F. Criswell, 80, of Temple and formerly of Brady, died Sunday, Dec. 2 in a Temple hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home Chapel, Reverend Steve Qualben officiating. Burial followed in Bellwood Memorial Park. Born Dec. 13, 1920, in Austin, she was the daughter of Thomas P. and Frances (Westling) Harvill. She married James W. Criswell on Nov. 22, 1944 in Fort Worth. He preceded her in death, March 16, 1998 after 53 years of marriage. She was the wife of an Air Force pilot who flew during World War II. She traveled extensively in the United States, settling in Temple after her husband’s military career. She was a member of the Covenant Lutheran Church. She was a resident of Austin for 30 years; Brownwood for two years; San Saba for one year; Brady for 12 years; and Temple for 35 years. Survivors include two sons, Gary Criswell of Temple and James W. Criswell, Jr. of Coppell; a daughter, Jeanie Criswell-Vance of Houston; a brother, Ben Harvill of Hurst; a sister, Thelma Lucas of Morgan’s Point Resort and three grandchildren, Corey J. Criswell of Dallas, Charles J. Criswell of Houston and Rebecca A. Christensen of Coppell. The family requests that memorials be made to the Covenant Lutheran Church or the VistaCare Family Hospice, both of Temple.
