McCulloch 4-Hers place at District Food Show

Twelve McCulloch County 4-Hers participated in the District 7 Extension 4-H Food Show, Nov. 17 in Abilene’s Taylor County Expo Center. This year’s event drew 175 entries from across 23 counties comprising District 7 of the Texas Cooperative Extension Service. Winners were named in the senior, intermediate and junior categories. Taking top honors in the Senior division bread and cereal was Meagan Schaffner with her first place sausage bread. Meagan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Schaffner. Jay Behrens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Behrens placed third in the senior fruit and vegetable division with his Puerto Rican black-eyed peas and rice. Leslie Ranne, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mackey Ranne placed fourth with her chicken teriyaki in the main dish division. Erica Paniagua, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Javier Paniagua, received fourth place in the nutritious snacks and desserts division with her guacamole. In the intermediate division Matt Deans, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Deans, received fourth place in the bread and cereal division with his barbecue biscuits. Katie Kidd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Kidd received fourth place in the fruit and vegetable division with her vegetable strata. In the junior category, Chandra Dean the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dean received second place in the bread and cereal division with her cheddar biscuits. Courtney Humphreys, daughter of Charlie and Connie Humphreys placed fourth in the fruit and vegetable division with her broccoli salad. Other McCulloch County 4-Hers competing in the District 4-H Food show and placing in the top 10 were Carter Humphreys, Clayton Shaw, Destiny Galindo, and Cassidy Wienecke. Each 4-H member won their division earlier in their home county’s food show. They were judged on their knowledge of nutrition, food preparation principles, and the quality of their food entry. The District 7 Food show is a culmination of the foods and nutrition projects taught annually in each of the District’s counties. Trained volunteer adults and teen leaders conduct the projects for hundreds of 4-Hers during the year. Winning first place in the senior division has given senior 4-Her Meagan Schaffner the opportunity to represent District 7 at the State 4-H Food Show during State 4-H Round-up, scheduled for June 10-14 on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station.
