The Brady Bulldogs opened the 2001-02 basketball season last Tuesday at San Saba, scoring a 71-64 win, then on Saturday, they were knocked off by a strong Lampasas team here, 77-47. Being 1-1 on the young season, head coach Shawn Dalbert said he was pleased with both performances of the Dogs. “We responded well in the opener and executed the offense well. We shot the ball and converted on key situations in the fourth quarter,” the coach said. “The kids played four quarters of basketball which is what mature ball teams need to win those crucial games,” he added. Against the Armadillos, sophomores C.J. Villegas and Cole Whisenhunt led the squad with 20 and 15 points, respectively. The Doggies trailed the Dillos after one period, 18-17, but came back to take the lead at halftime, 37-33. San Saba closed to within one after three quarters, 51-50, but the Bulldogs played well down the stretch to win by seven. The visitors continued to put the pressure on the Doggies and built up a 30-point margin at game’s end. “We struggled shooting the ball, and we didn’t execute offensively in order to get ourselves in a better position to win,” Dalbert said. He added that the Bulldogs never gave up and despite the score he felt “we learned much from a very good 4A team.” The Bulldogs will host Mason here Tuesday (tonight) and will be in the Ballinger tournament this weekend.
