Hornets hang in there; overtake Eagles, 62-43

After being picked to place last in district competition, the Rochelle Hornets pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes Friday night with their win over the Lohn Eagles, earning them a third place title in district. Traveling across the county to Rochelle, the Lohn Eagles got off to a good start and led for the largest portion of the game. In the closing minutes of the third quarter however, their hopes were shattered and the Hornets took control of the game and defeated the Eagles, 62-43. Rochelle’s Jamie Williams fought hard to keep the Hornets in the game and managed to rack up 264 yards on 20 carries. He compiled six touchdowns stemming from runs of 10, 40, 22, 60, 67 and 70 yards, many of which were kick-off returns. Tanner Stuart added another Rochelle touchdown in the third quarter on a one-yard run. In the fourth quarter Williams took control of the ball as quarterback and completed a 28-yard pass to Eddie Teague for the TD and later launched a five-yard pass to Houston Smith for the final TD of the night. Rochelle kicker Alex Vargas was slightly off in the first half of play, but began to see the light at the end of the field goal in the third and fourth quarters. Out of eight attempts, Vargas managed to soar the ball through the uprights on four successful PATs. Vargas also made three receptions for 43 yards. Teague had 126 yards on eight carries. “This has been a real pleasure working with this group of young men,” said Rochelle coach Tommy Meredith. “We pulled off a lot of upsets. We were picked to finish last place in district but managed to finish third. “We have out entire back field returning next year and I am expecting great things for the future.”
