Veribest not that great say Lady Hornets

The Lady Hornets from Rochelle proved to be the “best” team on the court Tuesday night when they went up against Veribest and squeaked by a 56-52 win. Without the powerhouse performance of Gina Baker, Rochelle’s Tanda Cook had to step to the hoop and lead her team on the board. A senior starter, Cook dropped 28 points in Rochelle’s first varsity basketball game of the season. Adele Richardson followed in Cook’s footsteps with 14 points and Sarah Crowder, Samantha Bryson and Jacki Williams rounded out the scoring with six, four and two points, respectively. “Our first varsity game was a tough one,” said Rochelle coach Mike Gardner. “We are having to learn how to play without Gina Baker. Tanda Cook stepped up and took control however, scoring 28 points, playing strong defense and accounting for several steals. “Adele Richardson really had a strong game with 14 points and did a very good job defending a big and talented post player. I was pleased with our overall play but we had too many mental mistakes. We’ll have to work on this part of our game.” The Hornets host Sidney at home Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in what Gardner claims “will also be a tough game.” Score by quarters: Rochelle 14 11 17 14’56 Veribest 12 13 10 17’52
