The Mane Lion

Lion John Roberts brought the program for the Brady Lions Club’s noon meeting last Thursday. His speaker was Brady Elementary School teacher Barbara Moorman, who heads the H.O.S.T.S. program. The acronym stands for Helping One Student To Succeed. Adult mentors dedicate one or more half-hour of their weekly schedules to work with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade student. The goal is to improve the student’s reading ability over the course of the school year. Mrs. Moorman told us that this year, there is a serious shortage of mentors. Several of the Brady Lions have joined the ranks of those helping, and we encourage you to do the same. One half-hour per week is very little to ask of you, and the mentors frequently gain more satisfaction even than the students do reading improvement. For more information, or to sign on as a H.O.S.T.S. mentor, call Barbara Moorman or Toni Muniz at Brady Elementary School, 597-2590. This coming Saturday evening at 6:30 the Brady Lions Club is sponsoring a very special Dinner Theater. The Children’s Community Drama Club will perform the humorous play ‘Roomers.’ Tickets area available from most Brady Lions, including the offices of James Long Real Estate and Rick Melcer Associates. The dinner will feature an entr’e of prime rib, and proceeds from the event will help the Brady Lions Club in sponsoring the Lions Honor Banquet next spring. As you can see from the activities discussed in this column, a great deal of the Brady Lions Club’s efforts are directed toward the development of our youth. In other words, we’re investing in our community’s future. To achieve our goals, we need more active members. While we accept new Lions any time, our special membership drive will continue through the rest of November. Two new Lions were inducted last month, and two more will be officially joining the fold next week. If you have an interest in helping your fellow citizens, and you want to have a good time in the process, call a Lion and say you want to visit one of our meetings. We’ll be glad to have you, and we promise not to pressure you to join ‘ too much! If you don’t know who else is a Lion, call me at 597-0561 or 597-3017. Together we can bring life to the Lions Clubs International’s motto, ‘We Serve.’
