Bruce W. Coggin and Jane Yeager Coggin were special guests of the Rochelle Study Club meeting held on Monday, Nov. 5 at the Rochelle Community Center. Mr. Coggin, who edited a selection of writings by his grandmother Ethel Neal Yeager entitled “A Soul Housed Up”, described the adventure of searching for a publisher for the book. He told of some of the history of the time in which the writing was done by his grandmother and of the people in the Rochelle area whose lives touched hers. He read a very moving account of the life of “Granny Cates” as seen by the author. Following Mr. Coggin’s presentation, daughter of the author Jane Yeager Coggin, answered questions. The Coggins were introduced by club member Valire Engdahl who was a neighbor of the author. Another study club member, Vonnie McCain, owns the land where the author did her writing and has her home near the same spot where the Yeager house stood. Many of the club members knew people who were mentioned in the writings, as well as recognizing places described. Members were told that a limited number of the books are available at the local museum or can be ordered on line at www.1stbooks.com. Three new members were welcomed to the club. They are Betty Edmondson, Betty Knutson and Mindy Gober. Hostesses for the meeting were Valire Engdahl, Billie Mae Smith and Dolores Barton. Other club members attending were Pat Baker, Betty Bourbon, Clova Bryson, Margaret Draycott, Eloise Ficke, Winkie Hendrix, Maedell Long, Vonnie McCain, Charlotte McDonald, Betty Meyer, Betty Stewart, Marguerite Stroeck, and Pat Townsend. Honorary member Louise Segrest also attended. Non-perishable food items were brought to the meeting for the Thanksgiving pantry of Helping Hands. President Pat Baker reminded members that next month’s meeting will be a Christmas party on Dec. 3. The meal will be potluck and each lady attending should bring a lady’s gift and men should bring a man’s gift. Value of the gifts should be around $5. A monetary donation will be taken for the children of New Horizons.
