The championship games for the Brady Youth Sports Foundation flag football season were held Monday night and four teams in two divisions duked it out for championship bragging rights. When it was all said and done, the third and fourth grade team sponsored by James Long Real Estate took top honors as did the fifth and sixth grade team sponsored by Heart of Texas Carpet Cleaning. With the bleachers packed with rambunctious parents and onlookers, the first game on the night saw the Commercial National Bank team square off against James Long Real Estate. Neither team had faced each other during the regular season and virtually the entire game was a defensive struggle. James Long Real Estate put the first score on the board when Jake Long ran the ball in for a touchdown. Seth Bozeman tacked on a point after touchdown to put them up 7-0. CNB scored what would be their only touchdown in the second quarter on a 60-yard run by Mackenzie Hirt. CNB failed to convert the PAT to bring the game to 7-6. Late in the second quarter, CNB was working from inside their own 20 when Jake Long stepped in front of the intended receiver near the 40 and picked off a Hirt pass. The team from James Long failed to capitalize on the turnover and ended up turning the ball over on downs a few plays later. The first half ended with a close goal line call that could have been the difference in the game. With only two seconds left on the clock, Mackenzie Hirt took the ball on a quarterback keep around the left side and appeared to make it into the end zone, but referees called him down prior to having his hips and flags cross the plane of the zone. The second half resumed and the teams battled defensively. The score remained 7-6 until late in the fourth quarter when Jake Long sealed the victory for James Long Real Estate with a 22-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes remaining in the game. Standouts in the game for James Long were Justin Yonkers and Jake Long with six and five flags pulled defensively. On Commercial National, Matthew Richardson led the team with seven flags pulled followed by Mackenzie Hirt with five and Zach Jones with four. H In the fifth and sixth grade championship game, the team from Brady National Bank squared off against Heart of Texas Carpet Cleaning in what would again be a closely fought battle. HOT Carpet Cleaning was the only team able to manage touchdown in the first half which was scored by Zac Conrad. Trailing 7-0 at the start of the third quarter, BNB took the ball and drove the length of the field in a drive that ate up nearly eight minutes. They moved inside the HOT 20 and were threatening to score when the HOT defense stepped up and made several key tackles behind the line of scrimmage. On fourth and goal from the 22, BNB quarterback Brantley King made a pass to a receiver at the goalline that was batted away by HOT’s Trevor McBee and the ball went over on downs. The BNB defense came on strong in the ensuing series and forced HOT to go three and out as they punted the ball to the BNB 35. BNB again drove down the field and moved to within scoring distance on a long pass down to the HOT two. The HOT defense again prevailed and ended up putting BNB at fouth and long from near the 20 and an incomplete pass turned the ball over on downs. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, HOT quickly moved the ball down the field thanks to a 30-yard run by McBee. A few plays later with only 13 seconds left, Zac Conrad scored from 18 yards out on a run up the right side. Defensively for BNB, Brantley King pulled four flags while Michelle Owens, Josh Behrens and Bryce Hanna each pulled three. For HOT Carpet Cleaning, Zac Conrad led the way with seven pulled flags while each other member of the team added at least one.
