Hornets cop first win of the season in front of homecoming crowd

The Rochelle varsity Hornets got the sweet taste of victory Friday night as they hosted the Mullin Bulldogs for their annual homecoming football game. In a fast-paced game that ended early in the third quarter, the Hornets buried their opposing team, 58-8. Mullin proved to be no match for Rochelle in the first quarter as the Hornets stepped out, 38-0 by the sound of the first buzzer. The second quarter was much of the same with the Hornets adding 14 unanswered points. Eddie Teague completed an 11-yard run in the first quarter to put the Hornets on the board. Alex Vargas followed through with a successful PAT. Jamey Williams brought in the next three TDs on a 55-yard punt return, a 45-yard run and a 70-yard interception return. Teague tacked on the final TD of the first quarter with a 42-yard run. In the second quarter it was Williams with a 48-yard pass to Teague for another TD. The third PAT in the game was good yet again by Vargas. On a three-yard run, Kodi Cook brought in the final TD of the second quarter. It took only one TD in the second half to seal the first win of the season for the Hornets. The play followed a Bulldog fumble that brought Williams into the end zone on a 25-yard return. TK Morris added 12 tackles to his individual football standings while Teague added nine. “Offensively we scored at will,” said Rochelle coach Tommy Meredith. “Defensively the kids played with lots of intensity and determination. We did not have to throw the ball much because of the running game and defense.” The Hornets travel to Blanket this Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off time.
