Terroristic attacks against the United States destroyed the World Trade Center’s twin towers in New York City Tuesday morning as the Standard-Herald went to press this morning. Two highjacked airliners, loaded with passengers, crashed into the towers only minutes apart around 8 a.m. this morning (CDT). Another plane flew into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. about 45 minutes later. The aircraft that struck the World Trade Center towers in the lower part of Manhattan caused both buildings, each rising more than 1,300 feet, to collapse about 9:25 a.m. Still other planes reportedly have crashed around the country. Preliminary reports state that casualties in the Trade Center alone are estimated at over 20,000. Deep concern has spread around America as the day continues. Officials have closed all airports for domestic flights and state and federal buildings have heightened security. As the newspaper went to press, no one has claimed responsibility for the devastation.
