The 1949 Rochelle football team was probably the best team for upsets in Rochelle history. My class of 1948 had graduated about 11 senior starters, and the ones coming back were very young. They hired a new coach that year’Clyde Teague. Most folks thought they would not win over two games. But they won 7 and lost 3. The losses were to Eldorado, Eden and Richland Springs. They used a spread formation that most teams teams or coaches had not seen. Three backs all set wide to the right. One back behind center. Five of six of the players live in the county today.
