Jenkins repeats, Alvares wins on first Goat Gallop attempt

The rainy weather didn’t dampen the atmosphere at the 28th Annual World Championship Barbeque Goat Cook-Off, but the 17th Annual Goat Gallop, held in conjunction with the well-known event, definitely saw a decline in participation. Unlike last year when close to 100 sprinters showed up for the challenge, only 46 champion hopefuls competed in this year’s Goat Gallop. Repeat winner Janis Jenkins ran away with the women’s overall title while newcomer Aneel Alvares came in first in the men’s overall. Hailing from the San Angelo area, this marks the fifth win for Jenkins. Alvares, a native of Abilene, took the overall title for the first time. Alvares came in with a time of 18.58 while Jenkins completed the distance in 20:70. Both Alvares and Jenkins received a handsome trophy and a Seiko watch.
