The American Legion and Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Howard Kilmer Post 510 hosted an appreciation dinner Tuesday night for four McCulloch youth. As annual sponsors of the Boys and Girls State program, the Legion and Auxiliary treated the representatives from McCulloch County to a dinner and were given reports and accounts from the informative visits to the state capitol. The Boys and Girls State programs are week-long sessions held in Austin. Held separately and independent of each other, the programs are designed to give participants a glimpse of the inner workings in local and state government. Four individuals, two boys and two girls from McCulloch County attended this year’s activities. Tara Simpson, Adele Richardson, Samuel Torres and Roger Gass were each selected to attend their respective conferences. At the dinner, three of the representatives were able to attend. Each of those took a few minutes to tell the post members what they learned and what some of their experience were while at Boys and Girls State. Each of those who spoke told of the new friends that were made and the new knowledge they now possess about the ins and outs of government activities. “One thing I learned is that there is a lot of time and effort that goes into running a city government,” said Richardson. Each of the youths present thanked the members of the Auxiliary and Legion for sponsoring them and sending them to Boys and Girls State and for giving them the opportunity to meet many new people and have an interesting learning experience. Following the speeches, the Legion recognized numerous local businesses for their support in assisting the post in sending individuals to the annual conferences.
