New carnival coming to town for Jubilee

A pageant, parade, fireworks display, dance, carnival and the 75th anniversary of the annual July Jubilee will set the stage this year for one of the largest events in McCulloch County history. The Brady/McCulloch County Chamber of Commerce has contracted a new carnival organization this year and will welcome E.B. Fun Times Carnival to town beginning June 28-July 7. Thrill-seekers can look forward to 15 rides and numerous game attractions this year. “This carnival looks to be one of the best Brady has ever had,” said Chamber EVP DeLaine Poe.” In fact, this will be one of the largest carnivals to set up in Brady since the Bill Hames Shows. “Texas-based in China Springs, Larry and Daisy Edwards look forward to coming to Brady and hope to stay awhile. Noted as being a ‘clean’ carnival, they take pride in the overall appearance of their operation.” H With the annual Fourth of July parade topping 130 entries last year, the Chamber is asking for public support in breaking last year’s record and surpassing it with 150 entries. “We’re only at 80 entries right now,” said Mrs. Poe, “but the last week is when we take a lot of entries over the phone. If we don’t hit the 150 mark, we should meet the number of entries we registered last year. “We have a little bit of everything registered in this year’s parade: baseball teams, basketball teams, pageant participants and winners, antique cars, bikes, roller skates, four wheelers and go carts. We welcome groups of all sorts in this year’s parade.” In addition, the Chamber is cordially inviting all past Miss Heart of Texas pageant winners to participate in the parade with a special invitation to the oldest living Miss Heart of Texas to serve as this year’s Grand Marshall. A caravan of five jeeps will carry the past Miss Heart of Texas beauties through the parade. Past winners of the pageant who aren’t currently registered to ride in the parade are asked to contact the Chamber office at 597-3491 or LeGrace DeFiore at 597-0684. The Miss Heart of Texas float will come out in its new Diamond Jubilee attire with the 2001 pageant winner, Jana Partin, and her court, first runner-up Jenna Behrens and second runner-up Marlena Galindo out in front. “We’re asking all parade entrants to check in at both park entrances for their lineup number no later than 8 a.m. with judging to follow at 8:30 a.m.,” said Mrs. Poe. The parade will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 30 at Memory Lane. Christina DeFiore will sing the Star Spangled Banner to get the parade underway while Matt Brady, a descendent of Brady’s forefather, Peter Rainsford Brady, will serve as a parade judge. As in years past, Steve Black will announce parade entries as they reach the downtown square. “We would like to remind all parade participants to have plenty of water available for those on their floats,” said Mrs. Poe. H On Saturday night the Chamber will welcome San Angelo’s own R.U. Redy to Brady. The group, which has opened for Doug Supernaw, will be performing at the G. Rollie White Complex from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. R.U. Redy has entertained the Heart of Texas on numerous occasions providing a variety of top 40 country and rock music. Dance tickets will go on sale Thursday, June 28 at the Chamber office located at 101 East First Street in Brady. Ticket prices are $7 in advance and $8 at the gate. The dance is BYOB, and no glass containers will be allowed. H The fireworks extravaganza will get underway at sunset on Tuesday, July 3 at Brady Lake. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the event will be presented by Zambelli Internationale. Prior to the fireworks, beginning at 6:30 p.m., free watermelon will be served courtesy of James Long Real Estate, State Farm Insurance, Dr. Pollard, D.D.S. and Super S Foods. Entertainment provided by the Heart of Texas Jubilee Band will follow the watermelon feast. The fireworks will begin around 9:30 p.m. Recognized as “the first family of fireworks,” Zambelli is the oldest and largest American firm both manufacturing and displaying fireworks. To help raise funds for this year’s fireworks display, the Chamber is currently selling raffle tickets for a Tecumseh gocart. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the Chamber office, Brady National Bank and Commercial National Bank.
