Former Brady athlete qualifies for state meet

Lindsey Nelson, daughter of Terre Nelson of Brady and George Nelson, former Brady Bulldog coach, of Taft, placed second at the Region IV, Class 3A track meet in her two specialties, the shot put and discus throw, last Saturday. With her second places, she qualified for the state track meet in Austin on Friday and Saturday, May 11-12. Lindsey, 15, a sophomore at Taft High School, placed behind Port Isabel’s Johvonne Hernandez in both events. The winning tosses by Hernandez were 45-1 1/2 in the shot put, breaking the record set in 1985 by Resia Johnson of Cuero, and 154-6 in the discus throw, which also broke the record of 148-2 set in 2000 by Karen Honea of Ingram. Lindsey, who attended Brady schools while her father was the head football coach here from 1995-98, was second in the shot put with a toss of 42-10 and second in the discus with a throw of 130-10.
